Ricky Blood made his debuted in 1976 in the American Wrestling Association, going be the name Sam Steamboat, Jr. and wrestled for a while under his own name "Richard Blood" but decided to settle on Ricky Steamboat or Rick Steamboat.
Steamboat's fame came after he pinned Ric Flair after a double thrust off the top rope to win the Mid-Atlantic TV title in Raleigh, North Carolina. Rick Flair and Steamboat would face off in many other sellout audiences in 1978, 1984, and 1989.
