The Office
The Office was a mockumentary taking place amongst the cubicles of the Wernham Hogg paper company in Slough, England. Gervais portrayed the selfish but well-meaning David Brent, the regional manager of the Slough office. The show, which earned several awards and an international following, was characterized by its many moments of awkwardly comedic discomfort. It ran for two seasons on the BBC for a total of 14 episodes, and inspired a popular American spin-off starring Steve Carell as Michael Scott, the U.S. counterpart of David Brent.Extras
Gervais' next attempt at TV, Extras, only won him more critical acclaim. In 2005, he debuted as Andy Millman, an actor who aspires to land leading roles instead of his usual background work. Each episode of the show involves appearances by famous guest stars that often parody themselves, some of which include Patrick Stewart, Kate Winslet, Ben Stiller and David Bowie.-
