Ulrich Alexander "Rick" Fox was born in Toronto, Ontario Canada on July 24, 1969 and raised in the Bahamas. He is a television actor and retired professional basketball player. He attended high school in both the Bahamas and Indiana, where he made the Indiana All-Star team in 1987. Upon graduating, Fox was recruited to the University of North Carolina, where under the tutelage of legendary coach Dean Smith, he led the Tar Heels to the 1991 NCAA Final Four. He then played the first half of his career with the Boston Celtics from 1991 – 1997, and the second half of his career with the Los Angeles Lakers from 1997 – 2004. During his time with the Lakers, he won 3 consecutive NBA championships.
Currently, Fox stars in the 11th season of Dancing With The Stars on ABC and is pursuing his acting career. His acting credits have included roles in Blue Chips, Eddie, He Got Game, HBO’s Oz, ABC’s Ugly Betty, FX’s Dirt, and Tyler Perry’s Meet The Browns. Fox also holds a producer credit for The 1 Second Film, which was the largest collaborative nonprofit film ever created.
Basketball Career
Rick Fox is a 3-time NBA Champion (2000, 2001, 2002) who began his career by being the first Celtics rookie since Larry Bird in 1979 to start on opening night. That same year, he was named to the 1991-92 NBA All-Rookie Second Team after averaging 8.0 points per game for the Celtics. At the conclusion of the following season, he was selected to the Canadian national team for the 1994 FIBA Basketball World Championship.
Fox continued this success in the 1995-96 season, where he had career-highs with 5.6 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 14.0 points per game. The following 1996-97 season, he set what would prove to be career-bests with 15.4 points and 2.20 steals per game, as well as 101 three-pointers made on 278 attempts.
He scored his 6,000th career point on April 5th, 1999 in a 117-104 victory over the Denver Nuggets. Later that same season, he would become an integral part of the Lakers 2000 NBA championship, with stellar defense in addition to 6.7 points in 17.3 minutes per game.
Film Career
Fox has served as both actor and producer in several film and television projects throughout his career. This began with his role in the 1994 film, Blue Chips. He then shared the screen with Whoopi Goldberg in 1996 in Eddie, followed by a role in the Spike Lee film He Got Game in 1998. From there, he was cast in the HBO series Oz, where he played a hardened inmate for four seasons.
Since then, Fox has appeared in network shows such as Ugly Betty, One Tree Hill, The Game, Dirt and Melrose Place. His film career culminated with Tyler Perry’s Meet The Browns, where he starred opposite Academy Award-nominee Angela Bassett.
Fox most recently served as a producer for The 1 Second Film, the world's largest short film. It is the first of its kind, as it is a non-profit collaborative film experiment inviting donators to be part of the film.
Currently, Fox stars on the 11th season of the ABC series, Dancing With The Stars, where he is competing against Audrina Patridge, Brandy, Bristol Palin, David Hasselhoff, Florence Henderson, Jennifer Grey, Kurt Warner, Kyle Massey, Margaret Cho, Michael Bolton, and Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino.
