Dallas Mavericks
Avery Johnson was relieved of his coaching position for the Dallas Mavericks by owner Mark Cuban, on Wednesday April 30, 2008. Carlisle became the front-runner and a serious candidate replacement, securing more than one interview in the Mavericks' search.
According to the Maverick's president of basketball operations, Donnie Nelson, they had a productive series of meetings and he commented: "We're very impressed by Rick - not just as a basketball coach, but as a man. We're looking forward to continuing our conversation. Ourselves and Rick are gathering some information. Both sides will analyze the situation and we look forward to continuing our talks."
A four-year contract was agreed upon on Friday May 9, 2008, and the final papers were signed the following day.
