Richmond VA History
In 1607, Captain John Smith discovered a settlement of Powhatan Indians on the site that is now Richmond, VA. An official city was founded on the site in 1737 by Colonel William Byrd II. In 1780 Richmond became the capital of the US state of Virginia. It was burned to the ground by the British the next year, and rebuilt over the next several years.
