  • March 21, 2008: New Mexico governor Bill Richardson announced that he would endorse Barack Obama for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination. Richardson said that Obama is a "once-in-a-lifetime leader that can bring our nation together and restore America’s moral leadership in the world." The endorsement may help Obama regain his losses in national polls, after intense press coverage of his connection with the controversial minister, Jeremiah Wright. Richardson is the nation's only Hispanic governor, and the endorsement may help with support from Hispanics, for whom Clinton has been the favorite in primaries and caucuses. Richardson served as UN Ambassador and as Energy Secretary in the Clinton administration, and praises Hillary Clinton by saying she is a "distinguished leader with vast experience".
