Richard Stallman

  • Richard M. Stallman is a programmer, author and activist. He is the president of the Free Software Foundation and founder of the GNU Project in 1983, which attempts to create a free operating system, GNU.

    He started the development of the GNU GCC and was the maintainer of GNU Emacs until early 2008. He also wrote the GNU General Public License, which is used by most of the programs in the GNU Project.

    He frequently talks at events around the world, where he discusses and advocates free software.
