Early Life
Richard Simmons was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He suffered from obesity as a child and weighed 268 pounds at his high school graduation. He graduated from Florida State University and moved to New York City, where he worked in advertising.
Fitness Career
He then moved to Los Angeles, where he quickly grew a dislike for the fad diet culture. He decided to open his own fitness center that would focus on healthy weight reduction through exercise and right eating. He began his career in the media on the TV show Real People, where he was shown helping individuals with their weight problems. A positive audience reaction, led to more work in the media as a motivational speaker. Currently, he hosts a show on Sirius Satellite Radio.
