  • Reality television star Richard Hatch won the first season of the popular CBS competition show Survivor. He returned for season eight, Survivor All-Stars, in which he was eliminated in the fifth episode.

    In 2006, Hatch was convicted on charges of tax evasion after failing to report his Survivor earnings of $1,010,000 to the IRS and sentenced to over four years in prison.     Hatch was arrested again on August 18, 2009, after taking part in an interview with Matt Lauer on The Today Show. During the show, Hatch proclaimed his innocence of the tax fraud charges. He was arrested because officials believe he did not have permission to take part in the interview.

    After receiving the $1 million prize for winning Survivor, plus an additional $10,000 for appearing on the live reunion show, Hatch failed to notify the IRS of the earnings or pay taxes on the money.     During his 2006 trial, Hatch claimed that he was told the CBS producers of Survivor would pay the taxes on his $1 million prize. The claim was rejected and he was sentenced to 51 months in a federal prison. Hatch was released from a West Virginia prison on May 11, 2009, and transported to a halfway house in Pennsylvania.     Hatch was the winner of the first season of the reality competition show Survivor in 2000.     He returned for the eighth season of Survivor, which was an all-star season, bringing together favorite players from the first seven seasons. Hatch once again butted heads with Sue Hawk, as she claimed he inappropriately touched her with his naked body. He was eliminated on the fifth episode.
