Rhine

Categories: Geography | Travel
  • Stretching over 800 miles, the Rhine begins in the Swiss Alps, splits apart in the Netherlands and ends in the North Sea.

The river serves historical relevance in relation to the Roman Empire. They believed that the Rhine was the end of civilization, outside of which existed creatures and beings of mystical origin. Cologne and other cities were settled along the Rhine up to two millennia ago.

  • Rhine River Path

Through Switzerland, the Rhine curves north and west until it hits Basel. Turning north again, the river comes within one hundred miles of the Danube, passing through Strasbourgh on its way north through Germany. Crossing through Cologne in France, the river lets into a series of tributaries, ending at Amsterdam.
  • River's End

As the Rhine flows into the Netherlands, two-thirds of the water flows west through the Hollands Diep into the North Sea. The other third continues north and becomes the IJssel. As the river splits and flows toward Amsterdam, it becomes smaller rivers and ceases to called the Rhine.
