Rhapsody in August (Hachi-gatsu no kyoshikyoku) is Akira Kurosawa's film portrayal of the emotional aftermath of the United States atomic bombing of Nagasaki through the eyes of three generations of two related families: an American family of pineapple growers in Hawaii and a Japanese family living outside Nagasaki. The plot centers on an elderly female survivor of Nagasaki, who lost her husband in the 1945 atomic bombing. While caring for her four grandchildren, she learns that her long-lost brother is living in Hawaii and wants her to visit before he dies.
