On June 7, 2009, Mysterio faced Chris Jericho for the WWE Intercontinental Championship belt at WWE Extreme Rules. Jericho managed to get his belt back and rip off Mysterio's face mask.

WCW
Mysterio debuted in WCW in 1996, where he became the top wrestler in the organization's cruiserweight division. Through feuds with Eddie Guerrero, Ultimo Dragon and Chris Jericho, he became WCW Cruiserweight Champion five times.In a hyped "Hair vs. Mask" match in 1997, Mysterio was forced to take off his trademark mask after losing to Konnan. He finished the rest of his time in WCW without it.

After a break off TV from 2001 to 2002, Mysterio donned his mask once again when he signed with the WWE. Like WCW, he instantly became the cornerstone of the WWE's cruiserweight division, but despite several Cruiserweight Title wins, he remained at mid-card level.That all changed in 2006 when Mysterio surprised wrestling fans by winning the Royal Rumble, thereby earning a shot at the Heavyweight Title at WrestleMania 22. Mysterio dedicated his win to real-life friend Eddie Guerrero, who died the previous year.
Mysterio went on to defeat Randy Orton and Kurt Angle in a Triple Threat Match at WrestleMania for the championship, then competed in a series of title defenses as the "underdog," due to his size.
In 2008, Mysterio was sidelined with a biceps injury, and was kept out of action to recuperate.
