Step 1:
The most important step in a retail sales environment is to greet the customer. Especially in a commissioned sales environment customers who end up buying usually do so from the associate that first greeted them. It is like marking you territory. It is OK if they don't have any questions now, when they do they will know who to come to. In addition to greeting them be sure to give them your name. This is going to be the first icebreaker for them and going to start the rapport building right off the bat. -

Step 2:
Many customers that enter you place of business will just be looking. Average sales people usually walk away at this point. The best practice that guarantees a customer response is to ask the customer "what have you seen that you liked so far". Just this simple response can open the door that you might need to close a sale. -
