Brief History of Resident Evil Unlockable Weapons
Even as far back as the original Resident Evil title on the Sony Playstation and Sega Saturn, Capcom has thrown in special weapons perks to encourage multiple playthroughs of the games.Resident Evil for the PS1 started things off by offering the player a Rocket Launcher with unlimited ammo if the player was able to complete the game within 3 1/2 hours.
Resident Evil 2, also for the original Playstation, expanded on that same idea by offering a sub-machine gun and a Gatling Gun, in addition to the Rocket Launcher, all with unlimted ammunition for your zombie-slaying pleasure. IGN: Resident Evil 2 Strategy Guide
In Resident Evil 3, Capcom kept the same basic super-weapons from RE2 but made them available only through the new Mercenaries Mode, which has since become a fan-favorite addition to the series.
With the release of Resident Evil 4, the unlockable weapons world was rocked by a number of additional firearms such as the "Broken Butterfly" and the gangster-favorite Thomson "Chicago Typewriter". Gamespy: Resident Evil 4 Cheats
