  • Besides the two new unlockable characters in Resident Evil 5 there are also two unlockable costumes each for the game's main characters, Chris and Sheva.
  • Unlocking Controversy

Screenshots of Sheva's Tribal Costume surfaced on March 11, 2009, and attracted a lot of attention from gaming outfits who hinted at the racist undertones. The costume itself is a skimpy animal print bikini of sorts and includes tooth necklace accessories and loads of body paint. Destructoid commented on the racism of this costume by saying, "All she's missing is a bone through her nose and a boiling pot with a freshly captured white man in it."Destructoid: Okay, Sheva's 'sexy' RE5 alternate costume MIGHT be racist

This isn't the first time Resident Evil 5 has been called out as being racist. Ever since the first screenshots and trailers were revealed, a number of people in the gaming community, including respected Newsweek reporter N'Gai Croal have commented on the game. Croal's first comment upon seeing the game's debut trailer was "Wow, clearly no one black worked on this game."MTV Multiplayer: 'Newsweek’s N’Gai Croal On The Resident Evil 5 Trailer: ‘This Imagery Has A History’

Despite all of the conversation, many experts in the field of anthropology stepped up and offered their own opinions that the game was not racist. Glenn Bowman, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Anthropology at the University of Kent played through the first few levels of the game shortly after all of the controversy started and said, "I don't think it's racist. I think people are looking too quickly to be able to jam that label onto it."Kotaku: An Informed Expert Speaks Out On RE5 Racism
