The Republican Party is one of the two major political parties in the United States, along with the Democratic Party. Founded in 1854, the Republican Party rose to prominence with the election of Abraham Lincoln. The party presided over the Civil War and American Reconstruction and was harried by internal factions and scandals towards the end of the 19th century. While currently the more conservative of the two major political parties, the early Republican Party was founded on progressive ideologies.
