    • China has promised military intervention if Taiwan changes its name
    • The current policy between China and Taiwan is maintenance of the "status quo"
    • Taiwan currently recognizes itself as a sovereign nation, as defined by the Montevideo Convention
    • China has stated that Taiwan exists as part of "one China, two systems"
    • Taiwan's referendum on seeking admission to the United Nations is considered by China and the United States as a threat to the "status quo" and peaceful Cross Straits Relations
    • Departing from their typical positions, both sides in Taiwan support the referendum
  • The Republic of Taiwan is the ultimate goal of the Taiwan Independence movement. The establishment of an independent Republic of Taiwan would require an end to the "status quo" policy of Cross-Straits Relations and a definitive Declaration of Independence from China. Opponents argue that the Republic of China is already a sovereign nation and changing the name is unnecessary.
