Some reptiles like Sulcata Tortoises are strict vegetarians and primarily eat grass. Others, like corn snakes are strict carnivores, and eat rodents (live rodents or frozen feeder rodents). Then, there are the omnivore reptiles who may eat meal worms, crickets, plus veggies. Pet reptiles, depending on species, eat a wide variety of reptile food.
What do Snakes Eat?
- Snakes: Many Snake owners feed their pet snake live rodents, but a live rodent may bite the snake internally as it's being digested, killing the snake. Frozen feeder rodents provide equal nutrition when defrosted, and decrease harm or aggression in your pet snake. For example, baby corn snakes or ball pythons who are fed from infancy on frozen rodents may still throw their coils around the "prey." They are constrictors and instinct is strong.
What do Lizards Eat?
- Lizards: A Bearded Dragon will eat produce and insects like meal worms and crickets. Larger lizards like South American Tegus love eggs, plus fruits and vegetables, and some meat. Blue Tongue Skinks eat both meat and vegetable/fruits. They will also eat baby mice also known as pinkies, live or defrosted. A green iguana is a vegetarian or herbivore.
What do Turtles and Tortoises Eat?
- Turtles and Tortoises: A pet Sulcata Tortoise or African Spurred Tortoise is a strict herbivore. South American Red Foot Tortoises eat both produce and meat. So do North American Box Turtles. Bearded Dragon Eating Crickets
When feeding crickets, dust them first with calcium powder. This is easily done. When the proper amount of crickets are in a "Baggie," place a small amount of calcium dust in the bag and shake lightly until the crickets are covered with the dust. Then feed them to your pet reptile, in this case a bearded dragon nicknamed a "beardie". The calcium is an essential nutrient for many reptiles.

Baby Sulcata (African Spur Thighed) Tortoise
This is a newly hatched baby pet Sulcata tortoise, (also known as an African Spur Thigh Tortoise) sampling his first tiny bits of lettuce. Reptile food needs to be age appropriate. For instance, a baby bearded dragon must be fed small crickets. NOTE: If the cricket is wider (width-wise) than the baby lizard's mouth, it could choke. Consult specific pages for these creatures and their needs.
