Renewable energy uses natural resources like wind, water, sunlight, biomass and geothermal heat to produce power. In contrast to fossil fuels, of which there is a limited supply, renewable energy makes use of resources that will not be depleted.
President Obama on Renewable Energy
During his February 24, 2009, Congressional address, President Barack Obama spoke about his plans to research and develop renewable energy technology.
He said: "Thanks to our recovery plan, we will double this nation's supply of renewable energy in the next three years. We have also made the largest investment in basic research funding in American history - an investment that will spur not only new discoveries in energy, but breakthroughs in medicine, science, and technology...But to truly transform our economy, protect our security, and save our planet from the ravages of climate change, we need to ultimately make clean, renewable energy the profitable kind of energy."Huffington Post: Text of Obama Speech (February 24, 2009)
Combating Global Warming
Besides being more sustainable, since renewable energy methods do not involve burning fossil fuels, they produce little or no carbon emissions. This means that an increase in renewable energy use correlates to a decrease in the emissions of greenhouse gases which, in turn, could help slow the process of global warming. The University of California, Berkley: The Rise Of Solar Power (PDF)
