Reiki, which means "God's energy" is a practice in alternative medicine that is a form of healing administered by the laying on of hands. Reiki therapists are conscious of life force energy movement during the healing process. Treatments can be administered for stress and anxiety reduction and relaxation, as well as for other maladies that result from an imbalance of energies in the body. Some massage practitioners may also use Reiki as a part of their treatment sessions.
Reiki was discovered in Japan by Mikao Usui in 1920, while meditating on Mt. Kurama. Usui was born on August 15, 1865. He founded the Usui Reiki Healing Method Society in Tokyo in 1921, acting as the first spiritual leader of Reiki. Besides healing, the purpose of Society and training was to attain spiritual enlightenment as well as healing. Dr. Usui trained more that 2,000 practitioners during his lifetime.http://misweb.morainevalley.edu/mis141/mis141300_14/history.htm

Featured Video - Introduction to Reiki
A reiki treatment of a patient is demonstrated in this video at the Body Rescue Zone. The practitioner explains the process and what she and the patient feels during the session. A treatment session does not involve any rubbing or touching acupuncture points as you would see in massage sessions. The practicioner uses visualizations related to the symbols of Reiki that help energy movement and stabilization for the patient.
