Regenerative Medicine

Restoring lost, damaged, or aging cells and tissues in the human body is the goal of Regenerative Medicine. This new field brings together experts in biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, genetics, medicine, robotics, and other fields to find solutions to some of the most challenging medical problems facing humankind. From specially-grown tissues and cells (including stem cells) to laboratory-made compounds and artificial organs, Regenerative Medicine researchers continue to look for ways to cure suffering with this advanced knowledge as well as struggle with the potential bioethic issues.

RegMed Commentary:

  • "Regenerative Medicine scientists and physicians are the 'Action Heroes' of the 21st Century." —California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger
  • "In recent weeks we learned that scientists have created human embryos in test tubes solely to experiment on them. This is deeply troubling, and a warning sign that should prompt all of us to think through these issues very carefully. We recoil at the idea of growing human beings for spare body parts or creating life for our convenience. I strongly oppose cloning. And while we must devote enormous energy to conquering disease, it is equally important that we pay attention to the moral concerns raised by the new frontier of human embryo stem cell research. Even the most noble ends do not justify any means." —President George W. Bush, radio address, August 11, 2001
