Refrigerators, or "fridges," insulate and cool items at temperatures slightly above the freezing point of water. Refrigerators are a mainstay in most kitchens, preserving perishable foods that would otherwise spoil in ambient temperature.

Maytag recalled about 1.6 million refrigerators after receiving over 40 reports of a defect in the refrigerators relay ignitions. The recalled refrigerators can overheat and cause a fire. On March 10, 2009, Maytag recalled 1.6 million refrigerators due to an electrical failure related to the refrigerator's compressor. The recalled refrigerators include "Maytag, Jenn-Air, Amana, Admiral, Magic Chef, Performa by Maytag and Crosley brand side-by-side and top-freezer refrigerators." Although several inventors helped develop the science of refrigeration since the 18th Century, it is German engineer Carl von Linden who is often credited for inventing the modern refrigerator. He developed a way to continuously liquefy gases, which results in lower temperatures in the surrounding area.
