Redd Foxx, born John Elroy Sanford, was a black comedian that gained a reputation for breaking the social barriers of race and sex.  He played the role of Fred Sanford, a grumpy old man who insulted friends and enemies alike in the TV sitcom, Sanford and Son.http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0289359/bio   Sanford and Son was ranked in the top ten almost every week it aired and at one point was being shown twice a week.  Foxx was with the show from 1972 to 1977.http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0289359/bio  He quit after disputes with the writers and producers of the show.  Foxx was a standup comedian and an artist as well, working with Slappy White and recording over 50 comedic albums.http://www.cmgww.com/stars/foxx/biography.html


 At the later part of the 1980s, Foxx ran into trouble with the IRS.  The IRS raided his apartment and took most of his furniture and other things to help pay back taxes of $755,166.21.http://www.people.com/people/archive/article/0,,20116272,00.html   Although at one time he had made over $4 million a year, a $300,000 divorce from his third wife and management decisions that cost him money caused Foxx to go deeply into debt.http://www.people.com/people/archive/article/0,,20116272,00.html

Foxx began his career as a stand up comedian in black theaters and nightclubs, sometimes called the "Chitlin' Circuit", in the 1940s and 1950s.http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0289359/bio  His humor was often considered "too dirty" for white audiences and his 50 plus records were only marginally seen in white record stores.  He was able to get some performance opportunities on The Ed Sullivan Show and The Red Skelton Hour before landing the role in Stanford and Son.http://www.cmgww.com/stars/foxx/biography.html  

After leaving the TV sitcom, he started his own show, The Redd Foxx Comedy Hour.  During this show Foxx would take questions from the live audience.http://www.cmgww.com/stars/foxx/biography.html  The show was cancelled at the beginning of 1978.http://www.cmgww.com/stars/foxx/biography.html  Foxx went on to start The Redd Foxx Show, which was canceled after a short time.  Foxx made a reappearance in Harlem Nights, and then was starting to film The Royal Family when he collapsed on the set and died.http://www.cmgww.com/stars/foxx/biography.html
