The Red River Shootout, or Red River Rivalry as it is now officially called, is an annual college football showdown featuring Big 12 Football rivals Oklahoma and Texas. The game is typically played the first or second weekend in October each year. Since 1900, when the game was first played, the Texas Longhorns lead the series with 59 wins, 40 losses and five ties through the 2009 game.http://www.cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/div_ia/big12/texas/opponents_records.php?teamid=2384
While fans may still use the term "shootout" when describing the annual rivalry game, SBC Communications, who served as a sponsor of the game, changed the title in 2005 to Red River Rivalry. This change was done in an attempt to remove the reference to gun violence.http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/blog/dr_saturday/post/All-Tomorrow-s-Parties-The-Red-River-Shootout-?urn=ncaaf-114100
