In Akira Kurosawa's Red Beard, an arrogant young medical school graduate is assigned to an internship with a simple village doctor. Played by longtime Kurosawa actor Toshiro Mifune, the doctor's caring disposition eventually rubs off on his protege. Based on the novel Akahige by Shugoro Yamamoto.

Red Beard was Akira Kurosawa's last collaboration with longtime leading man Toshiro Mifune, as well as the last of his films to be shot in black and white. It was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film and won Mifune a Best Actor award at the Venice International Film Festival.
