The Golden Raspberry
In 1980, a group of California film enthusiasts banded together to create the Golden Raspberry awards to name the "berry worst" movies and actors of a year. The group, begun by John Wilson, allows anyone to become a member and vote for the year's worst, awarding them a "Razzie".
The Golden Raspberry Foundation was designed to counteract other award shows and keep Hollywood from taking itself too seriously. In 2010, "Worst" Actress winner Sandra Bullock showed up for the event and gave every audience member a copy of her movie All About Steve which one her the award and a second one for worst on screen couple.
Why Raspberry?
The name Raspberry, for theawards ceremony and the honors bestowed on the winners, comes from a derisive sound that is made by blowing air when the tongue is between the lips. The noise signifies disapproval. The ceremoney and awards are intended to lampoon the Academy Awards and Golden Globes which foundation members thought took themselves too seriously. Often, the highest grossing movies of the year make the list of nominations.
