The History
In 1980, to counterpoint the congratulations for fine work in films, by the Academy Awards, the Razzies were devised by John Wilson, to expose those movies and actors that were not so fine.TIME: The Razzies (January 21, 2009)
As an Academy Awards party host, Wilson, to kill time before the Oscar show, invited his guests to name the worst picture. Allan Carr's Can't Stop the Music won the first Styrofoam award.TIME: The Razzies (January 21, 2009)
The name Raspberry comes from a derisive sound that is made by blowing air when the tongue is between the lips. The noise resembles the sound one hears when flatulence escapes the body, and signifies disapproval.
