Brief Overview
Raphael's mother died in 1491 and his father died in 1494, thus leaving Raphael an orphan at age eleven.
He spent a large amount of time in Florence, though he was not always there on a permanent basis. His stay in Florence coincided with that of Michelangelo who was eight years senior to Raphael and who is said to have disliked the younger artist very much.
After Florence he moved to Rome and was commissioned to do work by Pope Julius II. He was also later commissioned to do work for Pope Leo X, and today many of his works are still housed in The Vatican.
