Randy Pausch was a professor of computer science at Carnegie Mellon University. In 2006, he was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer. In August 2007, Pausch was told he had a matter of months to live.Carnegie Mellon University: An Enduring Legacy

The Last Lecture
Pausch was invited to present a "last lecture," wherein a professor is asked to ruminate on his legacy and accomplishments. He gave the talk on September 18, 2007, and the particular poignancy of his situation brought national attention.
