Randall Cunningham began his career with the Eagles in 1985. He was the backup to veteran Ron Jaworski. Cunningham appeared in 6 games, completed just 42 percent of his passes but displayed a great scrambling ability. He rushed for 205 yards on just 29 attempts. He was used mainly by coach Buddy Ryan in long yardage situations to try and come up with a big play with his running ability. Jaworski got hurt in the second half of the 1986 season and Cunningham took over as quarterback. Randall Cunningham became the starting quarterback in 1987. He threw for 2,786 yards and 23 touchdowns in 12 games. He also ran for 505 yards and 3 touchdowns. Cunningham lead the Eagles to the playoffs in 1988, where they lost in the "Fog Bowl" against the Chicago Bears, despite throwing for 407 yards. Cunningham was solid again in 1989 when he threw for 3,400 yards and 21 touchdowns. A highlight in the season was a 91 yard punt he had against the New York Giants. Randall Cunningham's best season as an Eagle was in 1990. He was named All Pro, Player of the Year and selected to his third consecutive Pro Bowl. For the season he threw for 3,466 yards, 30 touchdowns and rushed for 942 yards. Randall Cunningham battled injury problems two of the next three seasons. He played in just one quarter of one game in 1991 and four games in 1993. He was named Comeback Player of the Year in 1992 when he threw for 2,775 yards and 19 touchdowns and rushed for 549 yards. His last year as an Eagles full time starter was in 1994. Randall Cunningham came out of retirement in 1997 and signed with the Minnesota Vikings. In 1998, Randall Cunningham had his best passing year of his career. They lost in the NFC Championship game. In 1999, Cunningham struggled and was benched in favor of Jeff George, and was released prior to the start of the 2000 season.
Cunningham signed with the Dallas Cowboys for the 2000 season. He played in 6 games for the Cowboys and threw for 849 yards and 6 touchdowns. His last season was as a backup with the Baltimore Ravens in 2001. He appeared in 6 games, threw for 573 yards and 3 touchdowns. On 3rd down and 14 from the 5 yard line, Cunningham somehow eludes the rush of Bruce Smith, rolls out to the left and throws the ball more than 60 yards down field. Fred Barnett catches the ball and runs for the touchdown.
