  • Dried grapes, or raisins, are not only a popular high-energy low-fat snack, but also a common addition to many sweet and savory dishes. Used extensively in baked goods, such as cookies, tarts and cakes, raisins are also an ingredient in many Indian entrees.
  • Common varieties

    1. Dark: Dark purple, nearly black in color, Dark raisins are made from Thompson grapes and are the most common raisin variety in North America.
    2. Sultana: Dried yellow Sultana grapes native to Turkey and Iran produce Sultanas, which are larger, softer and sweeter than Dark raisins.
    3. Muscats: Often called golden raisins, these are made from white Muscat or Thompson grapes which have been oven dried and chemically treated to retain their light color.
