• A rainforest is a forest area that receives above normal amounts of rain. The Earth's rainforests contain around two-thirds of the plant and animal species in the world and are the source of 25% of the ingredients used for pharmaceuticals.

A Tropical Rainforest has more types of trees than any other area. 40% of the oxygen for the planet earth are produced in rainforests.

  • Rainforest Layers

There are four different parts of a rainforest that sustain distinct plants and animals within each layer
  • Emergent Layer

Consists of widely spaced large trees with umbrella shaped canopies that grow above the forest so they must tolerate strong winds and high temperatures. Monkeys and eagles are animals best suited for this layer.
  • Canopy Layer

The densest layer containing the majority of trees, 50% of all plant species, and a quarter of all insect species. This allows light to the top but reduces it greatly below. Most of the rainforest's animals live in this level. The science of exploring this layer is called dendronautics. The leaves have "drip Spouts" which allows raiin to run off which keeps them from forming mildew and mold.
  • Understory Layer

Consists of insects, birds, snakes, lizards, jaguars, and leopards. Receives 5% of sunlight and can be known as the shrub layer.
  • Forest Floor Layer

Receives 2% of sunlight and consists of decaying animal and plant matter. Numerous forms of fungi inhabit this layer.
