Rafael Correa is the 56th President of the Republic of Ecuador. Politically a leftists, Correa has fostered ties with Hugo Chavez and other leaders of the leftist movement in Latin America.

Political relations between Ecuador and Colombia were already tense after the 2008 Andean Crisis. The situation was worsened after March 1, 2008, when Colombian troops entered Ecuadorian territory to attack suspected members of FARC. In response, Correa and Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez unified against Colombia.
