    On Friday April 3, 2009, campus authorities lifted the lockdown that was enforced on April 2, 2009. The students were placed under lockdown after a man was shot and killed just a few blocks away in a residential neighborhood.     On Thursday April 2, 2009, students were under lockdown after a man was shot and killed just a few blocks away in a residential neighborhood. The shooting occurred around 9:10 pm and authorities believed the gunman fled to the school. Students were advised by phone, e-mail and text messages to stay in their rooms and lock their doors.     The university was founded by John Preston McConnell, who originally founded it as a women's college. In 1972 the university became coeducational. It was granted university status by the General Assembly in 1979. The first doctoral program at the university launched in 2008.

    The university has seven colleges: Business and Economics, Education and Human Development, Waldron College of Health and Human Services, Humanities and Behavioral Sciences, Science and Technology, Visual and Performing Arts and the College of Graduate and Professional Studies.
