The Quarter Horse is a cross between an English thoroughbred and the native Chickasaw. The Quarter Horse can acquire great sprinting speeds over short distances, such as the quarter mile, giving this breed its name.

There are now over 5 million quarter horses registered worldwide. Quarter horses mostly perform in rodeo shows, horse shows, and on many ranches in the western United States. They are also very prevalent in barrel Racing and calf roping competitions. The American Quarter Horse Association is responsible for the record-keeping and preservation of the Quarter Horse.
