Qtrax is an online music service like Last.fm and Seeqpod. The company’s about page says they are a peer-to-peer music site, where users can download free legal music. http://qtrax.com/about.htm Despite the delayed launch the music site Qtrax is up and currently running for users in limited countries. http://arstechnica.com/media/news/2009/02/qtrax-free-legal-music-downloads-are-finally-ready.ars
Currently Universal, Sony, EMI, and Warner Music group have agreed to join the Qtrax company with providing this musical download service. The music is free to download but the software is ad-supported, so some users may not like that.
The company had announced in 2008 that they would provide free, legal mp3s of major recording artists via a P2P client. At that launch, EMI, SonyBMG, Warner Music Group, and Universal Music Group stated that no licensing deals had been made with Qtrax. As a result, downloading was disabled on the P2P client and two years later the site is open to limited users.www.qtrax.com
The company canceled the December 2009 press event where they were expected to announce the January 2010 launch. http://www.dmwmedia.com/news/2010/01/04/qtrax-cancels-dec-24-press-event-promises-january-launch
