Unification and Expansion
Qin Shi Huangdi was the first emperor of the Qin dynasty, and he set up a society that followed the principles of legalism. Confucian scholars who attempted to protest his method of rule were often put to death. In another effort to restrain any kind of dissident sentiment, the emperor had all weapons confiscated and took down the walls that formerly served to separate the various kingdoms within the land. He also began a military draft that brought all men between the ages of seventeen and sixty into the army.
In terms of engineering, Shi Huangdi ordered the building of the first Great Wall of China, and he also ordered the construction of his lavish tomb, which included a terracotta Army.
