"One of Allen's oddest and most charming experiments."—Jeffrey M. Anderson, Combustible Celluloidhttp://www.combustiblecelluloid.com/digitalwatch/purplerose.shtml

"For all its situational goofiness, pic is a tragedy, and it's too bad Allen didn't build up the characters and drama sufficiently to give some weight to his concerns."—Varietyhttp://www.variety.com/review/VE1117794230.html?categoryid=31&cs=1

"It's all lighthearted and full of whimsy, and that's about it. Allen presumably is trying to make a statement here about wanting what we can't have, and how harsh reality can be, but it doesn't really come across."Christopher Null, Filmcritic.comhttp://www.filmcritic.com/misc/emporium.nsf/reviews/The-Purple-Rose-of-Cairo
