  • What is Purim?

Purim is a feast commemorating the salvation of the Jews when Queen Esther went before King Ahasuerus to plead mercy for her people. She learned from her Uncle Mordechai that the king's adviser, Haman, was already brewing a plot to kill all of the Jewish people. Prior to Esther's arrival she asked the Jewish people to fast and pray with her for three days and nights before seeking mercy. The holiday begins at sundown the day before the given date and does not end until sundown forty-eight hours later. Customs during the holiday include reading the Book of Esther, fasting, giving to the poor, feasting, drinking wine, and wearing masks and costumes.Chabad.org: What is Purim.
