Puppies are young or juvenile dogs usually less than a year in age that have not reached sexual maturity. Puppies come in hundreds of different breeds, resulting in varied sizes, shapes, colors, behavior and temperament.
Depending on their breed and age, puppies can range in weight from one to twenty pounds, but all healthy puppies will grow and gain weight quickly as they mature.
Newborn puppies are born with their eyes closed, and are virtually helpless for the first few weeks of their life. Like other mammals, puppies are nourished by their mother's milk during the early stages on their lives. Puppies are born in litters that contain, on average, anywhere from three to eight members.
If you have a new puppy in your home your first challenge with the dog is house training or potty training. Many puppies will learn quickly with the help of a consistent schedule and clear verbal cues (and of course lots of praise).
