In the U.S. pudding refers to a thick, creamy dessert cooked on a stove top or baked. In the United States, pudding refers to a custard-like creamy dessert that most often comes in a chocolate or vanilla flavor. Thickening agents are used in this type of pudding, usually eggs, rice, tapioca, gelatin or cornstarch.
There are many other types of puddings. In the U.K. pudding can refer to almost any dessert. Some puddings are savory, containing meats like sausage, or boiled, steamed or baked batters such as Yorkshire pudding. Steamed pies are also known as puddings, the most well known being steak and kidney pudding.
