The Public Private Investment Program is a plan developed by the Obama administration led by Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner to help provide a market for legacy loans and securities.Wall Street Journal: My Plan for Bad Bank Assets (March 23, 2009)
Encouraging Investments
The program will finance the repurchase of real-estate related loans from banks and securities. Banks will be able to sell pools of loans to dedicated funds, and investors will compete to participate in the funds and take advantage of the financing.Wall Street Journal: My Plan for Bad Bank Assets (March 23, 2009)The Public-Private part means that both the risks and rewards will be shared by taxpayers and investors alike. The intent of the project is to encourage investors to buy up real estate assets that are currently dragging the market down, by sharing the risks—and the rewards—with government funding.Wall Street Journal: My Plan for Bad Bank Assets (March 23, 2009)
