Psycho Movie

Psycho is a classic 1960 murder mystery film directed and produced by Alfred Hitchcock. Script writer Joseph Stefano adapted the Robert Bloch novel, which was loosely based on real-life serial killer Ed Gein, for the screen.http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054215/fullcredits#casthttp://www.film.com/features/story/whats-big-deal-psycho-1960/39889241 Hitchcock was integral to the film's marketing campaign, and insisted no-one be allowed in to see the film after it had started. Each theatre that screened Psycho had a cardboard cut-out of Hitchcock pointing to his wristwatch with a note that read:"The manager of this theatre has been instructed at the risk of his life, not to admit to the theatre any persons after the picture starts. Any spurious attempts to enter by side doors, fire escapes or ventilating shafts will be met by force. The entire objective of this extraordinary policy, of course, is to help you enjoy Psycho more. Alfred Hitchcock."http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054215/trivia Theatres ensured people were inside for the beginning of the film by playing an album of background music that was occasionally interrupted by a reminder (Eg - "Five minutes to Psycho time").http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054215/trivia

Psycho was nominated for four Academy Awards in 1960 including: Best Supporting Actress (Janet Leigh), Best Art/Set Direction (Joseph Hurley, Robert Clatworthy and George Milo), Best Cinematography (John L. Russell) and Best Director (Alfred Hitchcock).http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054215/awards

Psycho's Film Legacy and Cultural Influence

As a well-respected piece of film-making, Psycho has been given a number of awards. The American Film Institute (AFI) named it the greatest thriller of all time, and the character of Norman Bates as the second-best movie villain (Hannibal Lecter came first).http://www.film.com/features/story/whats-big-deal-psycho-1960/39889241 It came 14th in the AFI's list of 100 best American films (2007 revised list), and its musical score came in fourth for its category.http://www.film.com/features/story/whats-big-deal-psycho-1960/39889241

Its notorious "shower scene" is one of the most famous film in film history. It has been described as an editing "masterpiece", with about 80 fragmentary shots in less than a minute.http://www.film.com/features/story/whats-big-deal-psycho-1960/39889241 Bernared Herrmann's squealing score (entirely composed of string instruments) is effectively used during the seemingly frantic knife attack. http://www.mysterynet.com/movies/top50/killers/39/ Originally Hitchcock planned to shoot the scene in silence, but when he heard Herrmann's score for the scene he changed his mind.http://www.film.com/features/story/whats-big-deal-psycho-1960/39889241

Director Gus Van Sant made a shot-for-shot remake of the classic film in 1998. Starring Anne Heche as Marion Crane and Vince Vaughn as Norman Bates, the film was virtually a less-impressive duplicate of the original.http://www.film.com/features/story/whats-big-deal-psycho-1960/39889241
