PSP-2000 hacks were first made available in January 2007 when three hacker teams were able to work together and hack into the video game’s built-in software, or firmware. This opened up the device to play discs and applications that were not released by the PSP manufacturer, Sony. Hacks are used to unlock firmware on a video game device and allow it to run other applications or games. These programs are often referred to as homebrew, since they are created and distributed by underground developers rather than the video game industry.
