Professor Charles Xavier is a fiction character in the Marvel Universe and leader of the team of mutant superheroes called the X-Men. Though the character has never been had its own comic book, it has appeared in virtually every X-Men comic book, cartoon series, and film. Despite being confined to a wheelchair, Xavier is depicted as one of the world's most powerful mutants, possessing unrivaled psychic abilities.
Parallels to the Real World
In the Marvel Universe, Charles Xavier fights for mutant rights, but he also lobbies for understanding between normal humans and mutant. Because of this, he has often been compared to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. King's vision of a society where black people are treated equally is remarkably similar to Xavier's dream of a world where mutants are not persecuted for their differences. Like Dr. King, Xavier's message has mobilized and inspired mutants all over the Marvel world. Carrying the comparison further, Xavier's archrival/friend Magneto's more militant methods have drawn comparisons to Malcolm X.
