The Legend of St. Valentine
There is a great deal of controversy surrounding the legends of the popular figure St. Valentine. One story tells of a Roman priest during the third century who challenged Emperor Claudius II's laws regarding the marriage of young, potential soldiers. Claudius believed that unmarried men without family responsibilities made better soldiers, so he forbid young men to get married. The legend claims that St. Valentine believed this law to be an injustice to lovers, and so he defied the law and married young men in secret.
