  • The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian award given by the United States government. Originally the award was established by President Harry Truman to reward service during World War II, John F.     The award is normally given around July 4th each year, but also at other times at the discretion of the president. The final recipients are selected by the president, but nominations for the award are considered.     The white star represents the United States' efforts in the defense of freedom and democracy. The eagles represent the early struggle of the colonial U.S. for freedom.
