Officially known as the Barclay's Premier League for sponsorship reasons, the Premier League is a professional league competition for the best football clubs (soccer teams) in the English football league system. The Premier League consists of the top 20 clubs and operates on a system of promotion and relegation, meaning that the teams playing in the Premier League can be moved down to lower leagues if their performance declines. 40 clubs have participated in the Premier League at some point throughout its history.
History
The FA Premier League was formed on February 20, 1992, with the first games held in August of that year. The league was formed to break away from The Football League which had been the United Kingdom's premier competitive football league since 1888. Since the Premier league was formed, it has become the world's most lucrative football league, with more than £1.5 billion in revenue. Each of the 20 teams in the league play a total of 38 games during league competition. The only teams that have won the Premier League are Manchester United F.C., Blackburn Rovers, Arsenal F.C. and Chelsea F.C.
