Potomac Primaries

On February 12, 2008, Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia held their Democratic and Republican presidential primaries. Named after the Potomac River that flows between the two states and the district, the "Potomac Primaries" were important contests in the Democratic race between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

   • Maryland: John McCain, Barack Obama

   • Barack Obama: 42

4. Virginia Delegate Count:

   • Barack Obama: 54
   • Hillary Clinton: 29

Barack Obama and John McCain swept their respective party's primaries. With McCain having already pulled away in the Republican contest, the Potomac Primaries were a bigger victory for Obama, who was in a tightly contested race with Hillary Clinton.
