Portsmouth is located in the United States in the state of New Hampshire. Portsmouth abuts the Atlantic Ocean on the mouth of the Pisquataqua River and is a travel destination known for its downtown shopping district, breweries and dining.

Portsmouth History
Originally called Piscataqua, meaning "rapid waters" in Abenaki and then Strawberry Banke, because of the wild strawberries along the banks of the Piscataqua River. Then finally in honor of the towns founder John Mason and incorporation in 1653 named Portsmouth. Martin Pring was the first known European to write about and explore the Portsmouth NH area. Lumber, shipbuilding and fishing were early principal industries.

Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse
The Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse has been lighting the way in New Hampshires only deep water harbor since 1771. It is now cared for by the Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse a chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation.
